Window Cleaning in Manly

Manly is the most salt-exposed suburb we service, and glass shows it before anything else does.

Salt aerosol comes off the ocean beach on the easterly and off the harbour on the westerly, so there is no elevation that stays clear. Because salt is hygroscopic it does not dry to a dust and blow away, it stays faintly damp and catches windblown sand and dust, building the grey haze that dulls a water view even when the glass looks dry.

Sand is the second half of it. Carried up from both beaches, it collects in aluminium sliding door tracks and drainage slots along with the salt, and over time that shows as pitting and stiff, gritty doors well before anyone thinks to blame the windows.

The art deco and interwar walk-ups bring something less common: steel-framed casement windows, where the frame corrodes under a salt film and the corrosion then lifts the paint and stresses the glazing. Federation semis add painted timber sash with putty lines.

Streets here are narrow and steep, and much of the best glass is on an upper floor above a terrace or a retaining wall. We use water-fed poles from the ground and purified water, which lifts the salt and dries clear without spotting.

Owners here clean their own windows, watch the haze come back within a fortnight and conclude that coastal glass is simply a lost cause. It is not, but the method matters more than the effort.

Sydney tap water carries dissolved minerals. Washing salt-filmed glass with it and letting it dry leaves those minerals behind as a fine deposit, which then attracts and holds the next round of salt. Every clean done that way makes the following one harder. Purified water carries nothing, so the glass dries genuinely clear and stays clear noticeably longer in exactly this kind of position.

Beyond appearance there is hardware to protect. Salt collecting in aluminium tracks and drainage slots causes corrosion pitting, and a corroded track is no longer a cleaning problem. On the art deco steel-framed windows the stakes are higher again, because corrosion in the frame lifts paint and eventually stresses the glazing, and repairing period steel windows is specialist work.

Then there is the plain value argument. Water views are most of what a Manly property is worth, and a permanent grey cast across the glass quietly takes some of that away.
