A Paddington terrace rarely has just one gutter to think about. Woollahra Council's heritage controls describe a main roof, a verandah or balcony roof set below it, and a lower skillion over the rear addition, so water may pass through three separate levels on its way down. The front of the main roof can also be screened by a parapet, out of sight from the footpath. Gutter cleaning here means following the water through all of those levels.

Leaf load depends heavily on your street. Council's Significant Tree Register lists the avenue on Paddington Street between Elizabeth Street and Jersey Road, with 31 London planes, 17 Hill's weeping figs and 3 red apples whose branches meet in a nearly continuous canopy over the footpath, road and front gardens. Council describes a dense green tunnel in summer and open tracery in winter, which tells you where the plane leaves have gone. Plane trees are also planted on Oxford Street. Homes close to Trumper Park sit near its giant Moreton Bay figs, and Centennial Park and Moore Park border the suburb to the east and south.
The back of the block counts as well. The heritage chapter asks for one medium-sized tree in a rear garden, and it credits private planting with enhancing the lanes behind the houses. A rear skillion can therefore fill with leaf from a garden nobody sees from the street.
Then there is the hill. Rows step down the slopes of what council calls a natural amphitheatre, and terraces running north-south sometimes take up the fall with a basement level, so a rear gutter can sit higher off the ground than the front one. In the old village streets on the western side, houses often have no setback at all. High-reach gutter vacuums are worked from the ground, and box gutters, internal valleys, outlets and downpipes are checked.
Paddington's terraces lean on one another. Council describes rows with a shared structural system of footings, common party walls and cross walls, mostly sandstock brick and lime mortar, and its controls refer to buildings with no damp proof course in those party walls. Keeping roof water inside the downpipes is one of the simpler ways to look after a wall you share with a neighbour.
The front of the house has its own reasons. Council's balcony diagram labels an ogee gutter among the same parts as the cast iron frieze and the timber balcony floor. If a gutter like that blocks, those are the parts close to the overflow, and stucco can pick up streaks that stand out in a row of matching fronts.
Each gutter job includes a roof inspection report and before-and-after photos. A roof behind a parapet is hard to judge from the ground, so the report gives you a view you would not otherwise get. At the 2021 Census, 44.6 per cent of Paddington's occupied homes were rented, and for landlords those records show the maintenance has actually been done.
Small lots with buildings running boundary to boundary leave little room for bags of wet leaf. Rubbish and green waste removal can be added for a fee, so the material does not have to sit in a courtyard or lane.
Tell us about it when you ask for a quote, along with any rear skillion, so every level is counted. Paddington terraces often have separate roofs at the front and back, and outlets and downpipes are checked as part of the clean. The roof inspection report also gives you a view of the roof you cannot get from the footpath.
The London planes in that avenue are deciduous, and council describes the street as open tracery by winter, so a clean after the leaves are down picks up most of the season's drop. The Hill's weeping figs sit among them too, so ask about a timing that suits your part of the street.
You can ask for a quote on your own house or on several houses in the row. If it looks like a gutter or downpipe serves more than one property, mention it, because blocked water may not stop at the boundary. You may want to talk to your neighbour before booking.
The vacuums are high reach and worked from the ground, but the height and the ground at the base both matter. Tell us how many levels the rear has and whether there is lane access, so reach can be worked out when quoting. Team members are also certified to work safely at heights.
