Local history records a Black Swamp stretching from Mona Vale Beach across to Winnererremy Bay, and today the suburb has a Main Drain and a council flood study to its name. Gutter cleaning sits at the small end of that drainage story, but it is the end an owner controls. The job is to keep roof water moving into the downpipes, so it does not spill over the edge and onto ground that in parts of the suburb was once wetland.

Council's 2017 McCarrs Creek, Mona Vale and Bayview Flood Study examines flood-prone land here, including overland flow and backwater from tides in the Pittwater estuary and the Pacific. An earlier plan prepared for Pittwater Council centred on the Mona Vale Main Drain and Cahill Creek. A clean gutter changes none of that, and council's flood information remains the place to check a property. What it can do is stop a downpour pouring off the roof edge beside footings and side paths.
The leaf load is more mixed than a beach suburb might suggest. Arbor Day in August 1950 put 140 bottlebrushes along Narrabeen, Waratah and Park Streets around the school. Norfolk Island pine and swamp mahogany were the replacements chosen when a bus bay took trees from Village Park, and the golf course layout has Norfolk pines and gums. Homes close to any of these can collect fine needles, narrow leaves and bark together.
Housing adds its own variety. Postcode 2103 is a mix: mostly separate houses, with a good number of flats, apartments, townhouses and semi-detached homes. So one street can hold a simple eaves gutter, and the next a box gutter serving a shared roof. Our high-reach vacuums are worked from the ground, and box gutters, internal valleys, outlets and downpipes are all checked.
An overflowing gutter rarely announces itself until the damage is under way. Water that cannot reach the outlet tends to run behind the fascia or down a wall, leaving a stain that outlasts the storm that caused it. Clearing the run gives that water its intended path, which protects paint, eaves and the garden bed beneath.
A roof inspection report and before-and-after photos are part of each gutter clean. Much of Mona Vale's housing went up after the Second World War, so the roof above you may have seen plenty of weather, and few owners get a good look at it. Those notes and photos turn an unseen part of the house into something you can plan around.
Vacuuming also suits the fine material here. Needles and small leaves come out of the gutter instead of being rinsed along it and into the downpipe, where they would be harder to reach later. On a shared roof, the report gives a committee or managing agent a written record to file with its maintenance documents.
Pine needles and gum leaf add up to more volume than most people expect, and a green bin may not take it all. Rubbish and green waste removal is available as a paid add-on, so nothing needs to sit in a pile by the driveway after the crew has gone.
Not on its own. Council's flood study deals with creeks, overland flow and tidal backwater, none of which a gutter influences. Clear gutters simply help roof water reach the downpipes instead of spilling beside the house. For flood information on a particular property, the council is the right place to ask.
They can, because fine needles gather around an outlet and catch whatever arrives next. These pines feature near the beach and on the golf course, and they were among the replacements chosen for Village Park. A vacuum lifts the needles out of the gutter, and the outlets and downpipes are then checked.
Yes. Box gutters and internal valleys are part of the check, along with outlets and downpipes. Plenty of homes in postcode 2103 are flats or apartments, so shared roofs are common here. A committee or managing agent can call 1300 055 935 for a free quote covering the building.
Yes, as a paid add-on. Rubbish and green waste removal can be included when you ask for your quote, which helps if your block drops more material than your green bin will hold. Mention any large pines or gums overhanging the roof so the quote reflects them.
